Monti in Las Vegas

MONTI -LICIOUS SEPT 27 , 2009

Bob Stupak, "the ultimate Las Vegan" died Friday, Sept 25., after a long battle with lukemia. His resume includes the building of The Statosphere, a relationship with Phyllis McGuire, TV appearances, and, well, you name it, and he most likely did it. He was a one-of-a-kind personality and it will be a long time, if ever, that there will be someone quite like him.

This week also marked the passing of Elliot Krane. Elliot was a producer of the hit childrens' TV show, Romper Room and wrote several columns as a restaurant criltic. His restaurant column in the Las Vegas Sun became the first in a local daily paper .His Vegas Wire column ran for 23 years in Atlanic City. His Dining Out in Las Vegas column was another popular hit of his. So long great man, we will miss you.

A couple of heavy announcements were made last week, well actually it was three announcements or maybe even four. Of course everyone had been anticipating news from Wayne Newton's camp and we weren't disappointed. After all, Wayne Newton is the last of the vintage Vegas icons. He began his Las Vegas career in 1955 and fast became a staple of what Las Vegas was along with such entertainers as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and the rest of the Rat Pack. Wayne Newton remains part of the landscape and legacy of Las Vegas.

The press conference was somewhat vague but it sounds as if Wayne's Tropicana production will lean towards an autobiography about his life. His show will include entertainment legends and guest stars Wayne has met throughout his long career. Legends? Did he say legends? Wayne, it's Monti Rock and I'm right here! The show is scheduled to open in October and will run through 2010. Mr. Las Vegas is back and we welcome you with open arms.

After the Folies Bergere left the Tropicana everyone was wondering who could fill the showroom. After all, the Tropicana showroom remains one of the best on the Strip. Through the mob days, the many owners and corporations involved in the Trop, it remains a staple of this wonderful town. There will be many changes here as the new owners renovate and update. One of the casualties is Bobby Slayton, whose show abruptly closed on Sunday. Producer Anthony Cools is rumored to be closing more of his shows at this location. It appears that that there will be more changes at The Tropicana in the very near future.

CineVegas has decided pass on 2010. Hopefully, the film festival will resume in 2011, that is if there is enough of an improvement in the economy. Festival owners Daniel and Robin Greenspun feel that rather than reduce the level of quality , they will put the event on hold.

I was happy to hear that after Frank Marino's showcase at the Imperial Palace he has signed a contract for his Diva show. Frank has to be happy that after 25 years of performing he's landed on his feet. The show will include Jimmy Emmerson and Larry Edwards, divas all. Only one small advice to the divas, put some comedy in the show. We love you but we all need some comedy. Both Frank and Adam Steck will produce the show. Opening dates will be announced next week. I have great regard for Frank and he's always been very generous with Monti. He keeps me informed and has always treated me with the utmost respect. Everyone is looking forward to Frank's continued success.

Entertainer Tony Sacca is planning to open The Las Vegas Rocks Cafe at Neonopolis. The cafe menu will feature items named after legendary entertainers. Tony, as most of you know, has been a part of the Las Vegas scene since the early 1980's. Hopefully this will be the hit that Neonopolis needs.

While watching television's season premier of Dancing With The Stars a thought came to my mind. Why don't we just give the trophy to Donny now? Aaron Carter looked pretty good and this could be a career boost for him. It's a nice change from drugs and rehab. My earlier prediction that Ashley Hamilton and Macy Gray would be first to leave was almost a no-brainer.

It seems that Ellen Degeneres is a bit too sensitive when it comes to comments about her being a judge on American Idol. I stand by my earlier word. She's no judge. She's funny, she's a fan, but she's not a singer and doesn't know anything about musicianship. Paula Abdul on the other hand at least had both dance and singing in her background. She knew what she was talking about when it came to judging the competition. Paula's imitation of Ellen on VH1 was quite funny. Hey, American Idol couldn't ask for any better publicity, they've got to be having fun with this stuff.
.
Zowie Bowie opened their Sunday shows at the Monte Carlo with a 15 piece band. I haven't seen the show yet but from my year's of experience I can honestly say that some acts should stay in a lounge Thier lounge act is great, however, this show needs alot of work. Songs are too long and their are not enough of them. The press release for Zowie Bowie said they were bringing back Vegas but I've got news for them, Vegas never left. We want to see the new Vegas.

The Las Vegas Hilton has to be pleased with the sell-out audiences for Cheap Trick. They became the phenomenal hit of the season. December is the end of Barry Manilow's current contract with the Hilton and word continues that he might be looking for a new venue.

As a columnist I've seen so many shows, so many ideas and a lot of spectacular flops but I must confess I felt a sadness when Clint Holmes closed at Harrah's following several years of success. Clint had something truly special. Bob Anderson is another great entertainer and impressionist that should have had his own room here in Las Vegas, another unsung hero. Why don't we go to Branson and bring Bob Anderson back to Vegas? This could be a reality show, a possible replacement for Danny Gans. Just a thought. Like I said, I've seen a lot of shows and occasionally there will be a Clint Holmes or a Bob Anderson that comes along to share that certain talent we all love.

On the phone from Beverly Hills was my Charo who continues to mend. She was to be one of the hosts of ALMA the Latin Music Awards and even had to put her own reality show on hold following her accident at the Jerry Lewis Telethon. She promises to return in three months. We all want Charo back. .

There was major drama at the Palazzo when the lead singer of Jersey Boys, Erich Bergen, was recently fired while on vacation in New York. Rumors have it that the touble lies with the producers and the agents, not with this performer. I hear all his personal effects are being mailed to him. It's not unusual that singers and actors performing in an ensemble seek out solo careers. Jersey Boys has been quite the success for all the performers. And, as they say once again, the show must go on, the show must go on! There's no business like show business even if you get fired.

It was just announced that X-Burlesque at Bugsy's Cabaret at the Flamingo has been extended for three years. This is one of the topless spectaculars on the Strip that has been given rave reviews since their arrival in 2007.

Birthday wishes to Nelson Sardelli, one of Las Vegas' special people.

Thursday night brough us a "Red Carpet" premiere of the new version of the movie Fame. We still prefer the original. On hand were a few celebs such as Debbie Allen, Anthony Cools Frank Marino, Nathan Burton, Human Nature and funny man Vinnie Favorito. Debbie was of the few who were not locals. We've shown,. once again, that we are not a big movie premiere town. This is Las Vegas, not Hollywood,

Friday night was quite busy, what with Emeril opening his new "Stadium" restaurant at The Palazzo and Minus 5, the distinctly different and fabulous club at Mandaly Bay had a 1st anniversay celebration.

One of our favorite singers, Denise Clemente, will be appearing at The Starbright Theater on Oct 3 in "High Style Cabaret". Denise has built quite a fan base here in Las Vegas---she CAN sing

Las Vegas resident Marcel Forestieri appeared on the opening of the new Jay Leno Show. This Jay Leno look-a-like has made a career of impersonating celebrities for many years. He is a genius at creating theatrical make-up and has also done Broadway and voice overs for commercials.

Yours truly, Monti Rock3, will be bringing back Disco Tex when he appears in the 2009 edition of Disco Ball at The Taj Mahal Hotel, Atlantic City, on Nov 14th. Maybe I'll see some of you there.

Rev Monti, as always withes all of you a great week.

MONTI-LICIOUS SEPT 19, 2009

JUST IN------Wayne Newton is back, this time at The Tropicana. where a lavish new show starring Wayne will be opening in mid-October. Incidentally, Wayne is the only entertainer who has worked the Strip for 50 consecutive years, and now he will be appearing at 'the Tropicana, which has also been on the Strip for 50+ years. The formal announcement from The Tropicana comes on Wed, Sept 23 at a press conference. Of course we will keep you informed.

After years of writing columns, I can only ask the question, "What validates this columnist?" I discovered last week, following what were surreal moments, that my celebrity and my legacy are rolled into one.

Case in point: Media night at the Hilton for Cheap Trick in Sgt. Pepper Live was an A+. From columnists and authors Norm Clark to Jerry Fink - they were there. Guest stars for the evening were at the top of their game, too.The staging, the arrangements, all took me back to the time when music was really music. The combination of a small rock group backed by a full orchestra is fabulous and gives us the opportunity to hear live music at its best. The band is as good today as it has been in the last 30 years. They are one of those bands that you have to go and see. Cheap Trick at the Hilton is not to be missed.

Rick White and Ira David Sternberg from the Hilton sent word that the musicians and Robin, the lead singer of Cheap Trick, wanted to see me back stage. They welcomed me with open arms and told me how wonderful it was when we first met in the early '70s when yours truly starred as Disco Tex with the Sex-O-Lettes. We all had a great time reminiscing about the "old days" and how we had all arrived in Las Vegas to meet again. As if that wasn't enough, while Rick was introducing the full house to the band and all the technicians involved in the production, he took time to acknowledge Monti Rock and tell the audience he had met me in 1912. Looking back, maybe it just seemed like 1912. In show business we call this a "shout out." Thanks to Rick and all the gang. Enjoy your Hilton extravaganza.

For me, this was an eventful evening but the week had barely begun. On Tuesday, I sat for an interview with a representative of cable television's A&E channel. It's another documentary on Saturday Night Fever. This was a different kind of interview because A&E is telling the story of the movie's ensemble cast as the film continues to be rated as one of the all-time greats. It has also become one of the top cult films and can be seen on TV frequently.

Cher is back at the Colosseum through Oct 11, then takes a break and will be back again through December. Once again, she is sell-out. Her new Bob Mackie costumes are, as usual, fantastic.

During our conversation, I mentioned Vito Bruno, who is the producer for Disco Ball and who owns the actual dance floor from the Odyssey Club in Brooklyn that was used in Saturday Night Fever. And, of course, I believe I mentioned there will be another edition of Disco Ball in November in Atlantic City where I will once again reprise my roll as Disco Tex in Get Dancin'. My cup runneth over! It's good to be the Full Monti.

I had a long telephone chat with Charo, who was in a hospital in Beverly Hills. Ouch! During the Jerry Lewis Telethon at The Southpoint ,she severely injured her ankle and tore some ligaments. Could take as long as three months for her to recover. Just as her show at the Riviera was catching on, this had to happen. Let me say right now that other reporters jumped the gun when they said she closed her show due to small audiences. I have the real info. Some reporters should check their facts before writing such nonsense. You KNOW who you are.

People are asking about the status of Planet Hollywood. Will it become part of the Harrah's group? All indications say yes, as Harrah's has purchased a huge portion of their debts.. For months, I've been talking about Planet Hollywood being built over an Indian burial ground. Robert Earl, president, has tried to bring the Hollywood flavor to Planet Hollywood but things are not the same in this economy.

Jerry Mitchell's creation, Peepshow with Holly Madison at Planet Hollywood, is doing an admiral job but let's face it - Vegas is Vegas. t's not New York and it's not theater country. However, they did sign Holly to another year, so they are optimistic.

The only comments I could get from anyone at the Hilton regarding Earl Turner's departure in Voices was simply, "He's gone." Sounds as if Lani Misalucha, the other half of Voices, has her own show. Not to worry, this girl can handle it.

There was drama at the Luxor last week when Paige O'Hara, one of the stars of Menopause the Musical, injured herself and the understudy couldn't go on. Fortunately, a standby understudy from Reno came in at the last minue and did an incredible job. As we all know, the show must go on!

Like so many, I was glued to the television watching Oprah's interview of Whitney Houston. First of all, I loved Whitney's hair. It was a great look. Her highly anticipated CD came in at No. 1, yatta, yatta, yatta...... talk, talk, talk. It's interesting when you're away but you still have a fan base. We all want to see Whitney do well, but I wasn't buying the whole thing. Being an alcoholic myself , I know it takes a lot of work to walk the walk - not just talk the talk. It remains to be seen if the singer really has a handle on things. I love you Whitney, but let's have less gabbing and more singing.

Mariah Carey was a smash at Pearl at the Palms. Can a residency be in the works? Let's hope so. Hubby Nick Cannon was busy as emcee for the finals of America's Got Talent and seems to be getting better at it. Wasn't he a rap artist? I could be wrong.

I can't help but offer my critique on television's new Jay Leno Show, or should I say the old Tonight Show. The only things that have changed are the time slot and Jay's hairdo. The show also has a new set but it's the same old theme. Not even the great Robin Williams or Tom Cruise, slong with Cameron Diaz , could get the show moving. Maybe Jay should take a few years off to recharge and reinvent himself. Ho hum...

Television has produced a new favorite of mine though. It's the Wendy Williams show. I like this crazy woman. It's a total train wreck and it's the way I would do a television show - without a script. I just like you, Wendy Williams, so don't change a thing!

Of course, I have to address the Kanye West fiasco at the VMAs. Let's all give it a rest. It's not going to hurt his career, believe me. Maybe Kanye should produce one of Taylor Swifts albums and donate his earnings to charity.

Rumor has it that Paula Abdul is suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome and is kicking herself in the head for not taking the millions offered by American Idol producers. Not sure if that's quite true because her recent appearance on one of television's newest hits, Drop Dead Diva, was absolutely delicious. Given the right venue this girl could be a tremendous hit.

My charity event at Frediani's in Henderson was a success,. thanks to all the guests and contributors. We really appreciated the efforts of Mimi Hines, Terese DiMartino. and all my friends at Great Buns Bakery. To those of you who didn.t join us, a very special "Thank You".

The Rev. Monti wishes you all a fabulous week!

MONTI -LICIOUS SEPT 12, 2009

This just in... It was just announced Ellen Degeneres will replace Paula Abdul as an American Idol judge. Not a good match, but that's just my opinion. I like Ellen and I like her afternoon show but after all, she's a comedian, however she will be providing the fans approach. While Paula looks for new venues I still feel she may return to Idol. Don't hold me to her return but I feel she's the perfect fit.

Trouble in "tribute land". Sandy Hackett, son of comedy giant Buddy Hackett, has been dropped from "The Tribute to Frank, Sammy , Joey, and Dean. Hackett, who has been playing Joey Bishop, is the registered owner of the manuscript, also wrote much of the dialogue. Co-producers Dick Feeney and Arthur Petri have received a cease-and-desist order and now the "fun "begins. More to follow as reports come in.

Many are already asking of American Idol is on the down-slide. It's been the number one show on television for seven years and has produced some really talented singers and performers such as Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and Daughtry. Time will tell if the American Idol phenom continues.

Of course I have to include this week's dose of Michael Jackson news. Seems Jermaine and the Michael Jackson franchise might be headed to Europe for another tribute concert. Earlier reports were that Mary J Blige would be performing but she has recently denied her appearance and Shawn King has already withdrawn. Chris Brown was another reported performer but he would have to take time off from his latest gig which includes wearing a reflective orange vest. All the Jackson family members seem to be trying to make money off the MJ name.

Last week LaToya Jackson was spotted moving things out of her home here in Las Vegas. Seems the foreclosure scene arrived at her door.

Everyone knows that the Labor Day Holiday produces the Jerry Lewis Telethon for MD which is telecast live from the Southpoint Hotel & Casino. It was a good mix of entertainment with Wynonna; who incidentally was at her best, Jack Jones, Charo, who injured her ankle, and Maureen McGovern along with some local talent and some new talent. I can only ask what's wrong with Jerry Lewis? There seemed to be a lot of anger and even a lot of cursing during the telethon. Maybe that's replaced Jerry's funny bone. One wonders how long the effort can continue with Jerry when it's hard to watch this entertainment icon lose his cool. Fortunately the telethon was successful once again and raised more than $60 million dollars. Surprising, considering the state of the economy. My hat's off to Jerry and his efforts for this worthy cause.

The PeepShow at Planet Hollywood has extended the contract for Holly Madison for another year. Most peerformers in this show are signed for 3 month periods. She's created her own brand following her highlights with Hugh Hefner and Criss Angel. My hat's off to you my dear. On Sept 21st, Aubrey O'Day takes over as Peep Diva, the mistress of ceremonies. Aubrey has appeared in the Broadway peoduction of Hairspray is also a Playboy Cover Model.

In case you're not familiar with Peep Show it's billed as a Vegas spectacular and is the best strip on the Strip. Jerry Mitchell who is the creator of PeepShow is known as a Tony Award winning director and choreographer for such Broadway productions as Legally Blond and Hairspray.

This week I went to the Imperial Palace to catch Frank Marino's latest show. Jimmy Emmerson doing Wynonna and Larry Edwards doing an incredible Beyonce and Donna Sommers were both standouts. The show opened for a limited engagement but after speaking with Adam Steck, the producer, sounds like a long term deal might be in place.

In the audience of Frank Marino's Divas Show was Rick White, President of Marketing for Las Vegas Hilton. The Hilton is all up for this week's opening of Cheap Trick. It's the Sgt. Pepper extravaganza and the Hilton is fast becoming the leader in town bringing back the familiar sounds of earlier days.

One of the shows currently at the Hilton is Voices and a big shake up has just taken place. Earl Turner, one half of "Voices", and a well-known Las Vegas entertainer left the show. to fill a prior commitmant. Rumor has it that he minght not be back. Now the entire show will be created around Lani Misalucha, who was featured with Society of Seven before joining Voices. This could be a very good thing. Will the name change from Voices to Voice? Lani could carry it off that's for sure. She is the voice. and a GREAT performer.

Mary Wilson, formerly of the Supremes, opens at the Silverton this month and then on to New York for a stint at Michael Feinstein's at The Algonquin.. I've known Mary my whole life but she runs hot and cold when it comes to yours truly. One day she talks to me, the next day she doesn't. Lighten up Mary. Remember, we've both been in the business for a long time. We just didn't perform with the same Supremes. You had your Supremes and I had mine. Mary's putting out a new album after five years, but then aren't we all?

On Wednesday I'll be at the Cafe di Amore doing a segment for television's A&E on.... are you ready for this.... Saturday Night Fever. Part of my Supremes, I guess. Anyway, Saturday Night Fever,is one of the biggest cult movies of all time..The special will focus on cast members....Where are they now?

Firefly, at the Plaza,. had a ribbon cutting on Thursday, Sept 10. None other than our Mayor, Oscar Goodman made the cut, This new restaurant has a Spanish flavor, serving tapas, sangria, wine and flamenco dancers. Hopefully, another step in the revitalization of downtown LAs Vegas.

As reported last week, it's still just a rumor, but Wayne Newton could end up at The Tropicana.

Wayne Brady hosts the remake of Let's Make a Deal for television which starts Sept 15.at The
Tropicana. Tickets to the live studio audience are free.

Whitney Houston has done it. Her CD, I Look to You, is No I on Billboard.s album chart. 305,000
albums were sold the first week, which is her biggest first week total since 1991.

A reminder to all: The Rev Monti Rock3 Charity Event is on Thurs., Sept17th. For more information please call 702 755-33628 or 702-924-2606

Hope to see you there, and to everyone, have a great week!

MONTI - LICIOUS SEPT 5 200

There was great anticipation last week surrounding the return of Whitney Houston who appeare, in her first TV performance in 7 years< on Good Morning America. Right off the get-go I am coming to her defense as a singer and entertainer. Her early morning appearance on GMA which followed several interviews that/ together with singing outside would likely cause any voice to become raspy. Without question, Whitney's back!

The reality series with Whitney and Bobby didn't do her image any good and it may be too early to predict if she can remain on the straight and narrow. Old habits are hard to break, especially under such pressure.

Through marriage, kids, drugs, divorce, bad deals and lost money Clive Davis, the original czar, stuck with Whitney Houston. God bless him. In fact the release of her first album in many years will probably make it straight to the top of the charts and of course there's already talk about a Las Vegas appearance. For those skeptics in the world, move on and get a life. Whitney is still a diva and an extraordinary entertainer. I welcome her back.

Jerry Springer, one of televisions long time premier hosts, is coming to Planet Hollywood to host a 10-week run of America's Got Talent scheduled to start October 7. The show will take place at the CHI Showroom at Planet Hollywood Wednesday thru Sunday. Tickets are already on sale. Not sure where Nick Cannon fits in with this scene but I can say, even though it's redundant, I want Nick's tailor. Is anyone else besides me getting a bit tired of the Huff on the show? Huff, huff, huff, blah, blah, blah. He's kind of the Paula Abdul for America's Got Talent. He likes all the performers, some better than others.

As reported earlier Las Vegas will soon lose Don Marrandino, President of The Flamingo and other Harrahs propertiese in Las Vegas. It seems Atlantic City has become a rather dismal state of affairs and if anyone can make it work again, it's Don. He leaves a legacy here in Las Vegas that is hard to match when it comes to the right entertainer and the right venue. The afternoon shows , George Wallace, Vinnie Favorito. and tahe Donny & Marie show at The Flamingo all have the Marrandino stamp of success.

It will be a limited run at the Imperial Palace for Frank Marino's latest show which is co-produced by Adam Steck. Adam has a long line of successful shows including Thunder From Down Under and Louie Anderson, currently at the Excalibur plus American Storm at The V Theater, Planet Hollywood, and Human Nature, at The Imoperial Palace... The well-known psychic Sylvia Brown continues to amaze audiences thanks to Adam. I would have to say to Frank Marino that Adam Steck is a good lead to follow.

This month several of the new television shows will kick off their new season.and book makers are taking odds on Donny Osmond Donny may prove to be the one to beat with his appearance on Dancing With the Stars.

One of the charities that took place last week was the Keep Music Alive which was a Michael Jackson tribute at the Palms. Personally, I'm getting a little tired of the Michael Jackson drama. The brothers, the sisters, the nanny, the doctors. It's all too much now. Even Lisa Marie has come up with "inside" remarks about how happy they were together..... Please, enough already. Unfortunately it sounds as if he was a drug addict. Why don't they all admit it. It was a lethal combination of drugs that caused his death. The family has already received money, which will probably continue for many years to come. and Jermaine has already begun working a new act with producer Chip Lightman. Michael , 70 days after his death, was finally laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. This event reportedly cost the estate btween $500,000 and $1 million. The funeral, an invitation only affair, began 1 1/2 hours behind schedule due to the late arrival of the family. Attendees, such as ELizabeth Taylor, Quincy Jones, Gladys Knight, and Rev Al Sharpton, among others, waited patiently in the heat and humidity.

For several weeks I've written about Chris Phillips and Molly Taylor known as Zowie Bowie They were appearing at the Red Rock and the Palms but now they're busy putting together a 15 piece orchestra. for their Sunday nights Zowie Bowie Vintage Vegas Show.at The Monte Carlo. in The Lance Burton Theater beginning Sept. 13. Can they be a high price ticket act? I doubt it, but they are cute. They will also appear in the Pub, at The Monte Carlo, every Friday and Saturady night

Here they go again. The best rumors in town which include the one that Wayne Newton has signed a one year contract at a certain undisclosed property. Earlier it was reported Wayne had a big deal with the Tropicana but it went south. Now reliable sources are saying tjat they are negotiating again and he may have a contract big enough to pay back his creditors. Another current rumor is about Barry Manilow. Is he ready to "jump" the Hilton? A few months ago rumors were floating around that Caesars Colosseum was interested. With such a rumor about Barry it makes us wonder what is the status of the Hilton and the shake up there? I've heard the pink slips are flying out the door and include long term employees. There are also rumors about changes in the "Voices" show.

Speaking of The Hilton, thay are bringing back Football Central beginning Sunday, Sept 13. This program offers free admission toThe Hilton Theater. Food and drink specials are available and there will be give-a-ways. This and eleven giant TV screens make for great "football Sundays".

Months ago I reported the new owners of the Tropicana were not going to tear down the one time Strip attraction, but a change and refurbish was scheduled. I can report they've enlarged the showroom for Dirk Arthur and my dear friend Wes Winters will be performing in the lounge along with other acts.

Grind Burger Bar and Lounge will debut Sept 25th in Las Vegas. This is a novel premium" build-your-own burger" concept allowing customers to have fun in creating the burger of thier dreams. Mark DiMartino, a well-known Las Vegas restauranteur is the power behind this. The restaurant will be located at 360 E Tropicana Ave, between Koval Lane and Paradise Rd.

A new "gentleman's club" has just opened on Russell Road. It's the Playround and is promoting rock 'n roll music in the lounge along with lots of sexy girls. According to my invitation it's billed as Las Vegas" 1st Nightlife Complex. Ahem!

Once again, remember that the benefit for yours truly, Monti Rock's 2 favorite charities, THRIFTY WAY and THE EMOPORIUM STORE, will be held at Fredianis Italian Restaurant in Henderson on Sept 17 at 6:30 pm This event is being sponsored by Lance and Eva Posners' Int'l Rock Star Academy. Please call 702-755-3628 for more information.

The Rev Monti wishes each of you a great week. Contact me
