MONTI-LICIOUS 6/25/11
This week in Las Vegas has been a full throttle of events at Planet Hollywood, where we had Miss USA, and the beauties were out in force. And guess what? Miss California Alyssa Campanella, who clearly was the favorite, was chosen. Also this week the Divine Mary Wilson of the Supremes opened at the Riviera and in the audience was Clint Holmes and Kelly Clinton Holmes, who broke her ankle again so she’s out of Nunsense at the Hilton. Guess who else was there--Flavo Flav! Hey dude, what’s up? What can I say about Mary Wilson that has not been said before?
This is just an idea but I see a one-woman type show with the iconic Miss Wilson. She wrote a book about Detroit, the projects, the triumphs and successes, as well as the lovely Miss Diana Ross. Fans of the Supremes and Mary would not be disappointed to see this type of Mary Wilson Show, with Mary backed by a piano or possibly a trio, just singing, talking, and answering questions.
The Riviera is going through a great transformation - Starlite Theater, the Comedy Room and a new assortment of retail outlets. Crazy Girls, the longest running cabaret show in Vegas is still going strong . But again, all I can tell you is that when I go out to see these acts and old friends of mine, it helps me to understand that I am also a one-man show, a celebrity columnist, a critic-at-large - and sometimes a real nightmare.
At the beginning of the evening, we had dinner at Kristofer’s, in The Riviera, with two of my favorite people, Jim and Rose Perine, along with my manager/partner Bruce to celebrate Jim’s birthday. The menu selections at Kristofer’s Steak House were excellent and even surprising. We had a wonderful salmon, a stuffed pork chop that would even make the pig envious, beef Oscar with crab and asparagus (with an excellent béarnaise sauce) and the prime rib special at a great price. All of the selections were outstanding with rice pilaf and garlic potatoes as accompaniments. The surprise was the dessert - a Bananas Foster to die for. The presentation was almost breathtaking and was large enough to feed the entire table. Even for those in our group who didn’t care for bananas, the dessert had something to offer. The boat in which the dessert was served was a small, nutty, taco-type basket shell filled with ice cream, bananas and caramel sauce and abundant whipped cream adorned the plate. This was both visually stimulating and a jolt to the taste buds.
This week in Vegas we were all shocked and dismayed that Crystal Harris, runaway bride, was at the Wet Republic with Heidi Montag with the big bazooms. These are the dueling divas. And in the other corner we had Holly Madison defending her ex-husband. We have so much to talk about regarding George Maloof at the Palms. His sister has the LA Housewives and they own the team. Andy Cohen was also here and he said that he would never produce a show called the Las Vegas Housewives. For all you wannabes in Las Vegas, “get a life!” Back to the Maloof situation, restructuring at The Palms has left the family with a 2% ownership and George Maloof continuing as chairman of the board, leaving them in a position to do many things that other places can't do since they have no debt.
Phantom-The Las Vegas Spectacular celebreated its 5th anniversary with another oustanding performance. Keeping this huge production running has meant offering some discounted seats, a reduced performance schedule, and certain union concessions. All of this is well worth it as gives audiences the opportunity of seeing one of the greatest theatrical productions ever produced in Las Vegas, or any where else for that matter Anthony Crivello, the Phantom, consistantly gives outstanding performances, but he has outdone himself during this anniversary show. He and the cast have never been better and the chandelier sequence still leaves audiences gasping.
Human Nature will be celebrating it's 500th show at The Imperial Palace on June 30th. PBS will be filming at the Paris Theater on July 6 and 7 for the group's first PBS special with an appearance by Smokey Robinson. Also coming up is the 30-year anniversary of Jubilee at Bally's. This is the definative showgirl extravaganza and is still a must-see.
Matt Goss, the British singing sensation, will help celebrate Independence Day and Labor Day with special performances inside the Gossy Room at Caesars Palace on July3 and Sept 4. Tickets for all performances offer locals a special price through September 3. For more information contact Caesars at 1-800-745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com.
The fantastic Pointer Sisters will be performing their hits at The Orleans Showroom July 16 and 17, and Las Vegas favorite Clint Holmes will be at the Suncoast July 2 and 3.
For the last few months we have been discussing the Monti Rock reality show titled “The Pointless Life of Rock III” but I call it “What’s the point?” This week it has been rumored that the show Menopause, at The Luxor, may be closing. Just a rumor folks. Also at the Palms this week were the NHL Awards with lots of stars and testosterone.
The diva in residence, Celine, is selling out at the Colosseum and we are now waiting for Shania. This columnist cannot help but address the Oprah Winfrey Network, which is in big, big trouble. Rumor has it that O.J. will be confessing on her (OWN ) TV show, which should be a big ratings grabber. Remember, she wasn’t at the Hilton Daytime Emmys because she was busy restructuring. Oprah, call me. I have the most interesting tale to tell you. I am the “Comeback Queen” or is it “Drama Queen?” Just give me a call or e-mail me. I’m in the book. I’ll save the network for you!

As reported last week, the political scene in Las Vegas was all in, wins, losses and near-wins. Sounds like Mayor Caroline Goodman is ready to go. She's assuming her position as our new mayor but has a lot to prove.
Last week was also filled with pageants, Holly, Holly, Holly Madison everywhere, red carpets and movies premieres.
The Las Vegas Film Festival kicked off this year's event at the Hilton on June 15 with a movie that featured Olympic Gold Medalists Lindsay Vonn and Bode Miller in a "masked documentary" reported to be the best ski film ever.
My friend, magician Steve Wyrick, has found a new home at the Las Vegas Hilton. Should be a good venue for this talented young man. Also at the Hilton, Kelly Clinton Holmes brings her talent to the show Nunsense, which has had a good run.
The Riviera's line-up for summer includes Mary Wilson, formerly with the Supremes, who opens next week and Connie Stevens and John Byner will perform together starting July 6. Connie Stevens is known best for her movies, television and recordings while John Byner's comedy is legendary.
Jeff Timmons is having a tremendous success as a guest star with The Chippendales at The RIo. He has signed to stay through Sept. as the shows have been a complete since he began.
Anytime we get a chance to catch an iconic performer ... we're there. When you consider the ages of some of these artists, it's unbelievable how their performances continue to be so great. Joan Rivers always has the audience rolling in the aisles and covers the stage from one side to the other. Don Rickles is another ageless performer who amazes the audience with each performance. This man never fails to deliver. This past week another icon, 89-year-old Marty Allen, stood in for vacationing Louie Anderson at Palace Station. Marty and his co-star wife Karon Kate Blackwell put on a most entertaining show. Karon is a great performer and is the perfect foil for the ageless Marty Allen. Too bad they're here for one week only.
On June 26 the Golden Ribbon presents the Best of Las Vegas Entertainment on behalf of Ribbon of Life. The event will be held at Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. When they say the Best of Entertainment, it's true. Audiences will be amazed and it's good to know you're one of those helping a worthwhile cause. This is the 25th Anniversary celebration for Golden Rainbow's continued service to AID/HIV benefit.
Received an update regarding the AFAN 25th Annual Black & White Party to be held August 27 at 9 p.m. at the Boulevard Pool in the Cosmopolitan. For complete details call 702-651-2432.
The Cosmopolitan, despite great reviews and huge popularity with tourists, is still not showing a profit. However, it's the place to be on weekends. Hopefully the red ink will soon turn to black.
More light at the end of the tunnel for downtown: Denny's will open a large restaurant in Neonopolis and the refurbished Plaza Hotel/Casino will reopen in September. The newly decorated rooms feature the never-used furnishings designed for the never-completed Fountainbleu. This should be a good shot in the arm for downtown Vegas.
Jersey Boys at the Venetian was on my must-see-again list. This is another not to be missed, not only for the music but for the dynamic all-around performances of the cast. Let's face it, they can act as well as sing and dance. As the story about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is unveiled, it's a reminder that in a small way I was part of that history because of my connection with Bob Crewe, who was an integral part of the story. Mr Crewe was one of the most prolific songwriter/producers of his era. There's a closure here somewhere and I hate to admit it but Bob Crewe is part of the Monti Rock legacy.
On the local news front, talk continues about Sue Manteris who left Channel 3 television after approximately 22 years of delivering the news. Channel 3 is reportedly being sued for discrimination. We liked Sue Manteris and thought she was one of the best professionally, but times seem to be changing and maybe the station was seeking younger messengers. Keep on eye on this.
Jackie Baskow and her company may be another local brouhaha to watch. Stay tuned on this, too.
Looking for Vegas memorabilia? Memorabilia and furnishings are all included in the sale of everything Sahara. >From a teaspoon to a chandelier it all goes. The sale began with items priced as little at a buck for glassware to thousands for large items.
Here's one for the books! Caesars Palace is offering The Hangover Again Hotel Package. Fans of the film Hangover II can delight in all the specialty events provided with the package. Starting rate is $100/day and includes a $50 credit for food and drink. They're even featuring Hangover II slots in the casino.
The Monti Rock III slot machine is almost ready. Words can't explain how exciting this is for your columnist. Guru designer Ken Baker and his staff have created a masterpiece - and with my name on it!
Some would say Paris Hilton's newest reality show is a tanker. I would say, "Paris, get a life! Your 15 minutes of fame are up." Come to think of it, her 15 minutes of fame are up, but so are mine!
Once again my friends at the Grand Cafe at Palace Station outdid themselves. I was delighted to be able to take my business associates to the Grand Cafe for a small get-together and as usual the staff was more than accommodating. The food and the service are unsurpassed for cafe style. The creation of Station's Grand Cafe has been a smart move and General Manager Mike McTigue is a great addition.
Regular readers of Gaming Today know I'm a fan of Chang's Hog Kong Chinese restaurant at 4660 South Decatur. Everyone finds their menu to be exceptional, and who doesn't like dining on white table cloths. All of your original favorites are featured and the service is superb. Catering is another feature offered by Chang's.
Let's give a shout-out to Marvin Lashever, who is mending from a recent heart attack. Marvin, we all love you and pray for your speedy recovery.
Felix Rappaport , President of THE Mirage, has shed 20+ lbs,. since his heart by-pass surgery. Felix looks great and feels well. Keep up the good work my friend---Las Vegas needs people like
you, especially your friends and co-worker
Rev. Monti wishes you all a great week.

How about the Tony Show! this was arguably the best of The Tony Shows. Neal Patrick Harris proved once again that he is one the the really great all-around performers. The Broadway Theater really know how to put a classy show together. The crowd was beautifully dressed and the presenters were very well chosen, especially Ellen Barken, Catherine Zeta Jones, Hugh Jackman and of course, Angela Lansbury. The 3 hour production juist kept moving along.
As of this week, Las Vegas has a new mayor. The Goodman dynasty continues as Mayor Oscar Goodman turns the gavel over to his lovely wife Caroline. With the popularity Oscar has enjoyed, it's expected Caroline will follow in his footsteps.
The Mirage is celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Love which continues to do a brisk business. Love is the Beatles production created by the addition of Cirque Du Soleil.
Another upcoming Fifth Anniversary(June 24) is Phantom-the Las Vegas Spectacular. This magnificent production features Anthony Crivello as the Phantom along with a great group of performers and an unbelievable chandelier. This is one of the best and most lavish productions ever put on stage.
One of the great moments of the week was Cheyenne Marketing's grand opening of Dream Vision Studios and Women In Film. Shawn Lane heads up Cheyenne Marketing and joined forces with Phyllis Carreon-Taie to create this magnificent 11,000-square-foot stage. Phyllis is the founder of the Las Vegas branch of Women in Film and is highly regarded in the industry. Green Vision Studios is located at 4544 West Russell Road.
Regular readers know there is no way this columnist can avoid some of the week's headlines. For example: Weiner, Weiner, Weiner! Do we need any more scandals? Resign already. It's been great fodder for all the comedians though.
The annual AFAN Black & White Party date has just been released - it's August 27. This year the party will be held at the Boulevard Pool at the new and beautiful Cosmopolitan. For more details, contact afanlv.org. It's a great time to check out all the current and chic looks that are only found in Las Vegas, Baby!
Mary Wilson, formerly with the Supremes, will appear at the Riviera from June 22-July 3. I've actually known Mary for many years, but I never know what to expect when I go backstage. Sometimes she knows me and sometimes she doesn't. Hot and cold doesn't work so well for me.
The Pointer Sisters will be appearing at the Orleans July 16 and 17 and Engelbert Humperdinck will be back on The Strip at Paris July21-July24. It's good to see these iconic performers back on stage where they belong. No special effects, just plain old-fashioned talent. The Pointer Sisters have been on the hit charts since the '80s and continue singing their hearts out for audiences. Among all their awards and acknowledgments, the Soul Train Hall of Fame has to be at the top of their list.
The Colosseum at Caesars keeps coming up with more superstars. Shania Twain is on the comeback trail and has signed for 60 shows (30 each for two years), beginning in 2012. Just a few years ago, Shania was one of the top country performers in the business before "drowning" in personal problems. These troubles have hopefully been overcome and she once again will be a leader in the pack.
The Cannery group has entered into "Summer Concert FUN!" Rampart, Eastside Cannery, and The Cannery have quite a lineup of weekend shows. Among them are Wilson Phillips, Men of the Soul Tour, Michael McDonald and Michael Bolton to name a few. For more information as to time and dates, contact the casinos directly. Cannery and Station Casinos have something for everyone this summer!
Sources tell me business is picking up at the Riviera, which is good news for Rich Little. Connie Stevens is part of their current line up along with John Byner and The 5th Dimension.
The Monti Minute should be on the air in a couple of weeks. It's going to be filled with show details, dining features and gossip, gossip, gossip. Should be fun.
With a new Las Vegas Mayor, a new Nevada Governor and the Monti Minute.... we have a lot to look forward to.

As a gossip columnist, committed foodie and theater critic, I spend the better part of my work week covering all the fabulous shows, clubs, restaurant openings and special events on The Strip—’tis good to be Monti Rock.
Come Saturday and Sunday, what I enjoy most is kicking back in my own neighborhood...Yes, Vegas does have neighborhoods.
One of my favorite haunts has been a Las Vegas fixture for over a quarter century, Siena Italian. Owners Antonio Accornero and Giancarlo Bomparola have created a truly authentic Italian Trattoria experience and recently relocated it to a new, urban-chic site, which includes not only a restaurant, bar and lounge with indoor and al fresco seating, but soon, an Italian Marketplace complete with a bakery, deli and coffee bar.
Trained in Milan, Italy, Chef Giancarlo works the kitchen while Antonio, with his infinite Italian charm, works the front of the house. For starters, you must have the Tortino di Riso—rice cakes, Parmesan cheese and mushrooms in truffle oil—to die for!
Going on to salad, my favorite is Mele E Noci—baby greens, roasted walnuts, apple and Gorgonzola tossed with champagne vinaigrette—heavenly!
The main event, new to the menu this month, Misto Pesce Griglia—fresh scampi, calamari, tuna, jumbo scallops and salmon simmered in lemon juice and olive oil and served with fresh seasonal vegetables—died and gone to heaven for!
And for the encore (I'm sure you’ve had this before, but not this good), Tiramisu—Chef Giancarlo’s family recipe—certain to assure Giancarlo sainthood!
Siena also features live entertainment in the bar and lounge Wed. and Sat. with Sinatra-style crooner Larry Liso. Siena Authentic Italian
Trattoria | Daily, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; half-price Happy Hour specials in the bar and lounge, daily, 3:30-7:30 p.m. | 9500 W. Sahara Ave. | 702-360-3358 |
