MONTI-LICIOUS APRIL 26, 2009
The Miss USA Pageant was held this week at Planet
Hollywood where the beautiful Miss California, who
has a right to her opinion, lost the crown due to
her response to a question posed by Perez Hilton.
Perez Hilton, the blogger, tends to be mean
spirited at every opportunity. He's known for
outing men who don't want to come out of the
closet among other things. Why do we have to make
a gay issue of a pageant when each of us is
allowed to have our own opinion. I also take
issue with reporter Alicia Jacobs and others who
tend to come across, or at least try to, as holier
than thou when it comes to the religious right or
political correctness. This is America and a
right to free speech is a guarantee.
Not long ago Criss Angel brought his show Believe
at the Luxor to a stop when he spotted Perez
Hilton in the audience. I've been told Criss
didn't mince any words in calling out Hilton. If
I had been Criss Angel, I might have shot Hilton.
As a gossip aficionado I try to be fair and
impartial. True, sometimes my facts are
convoluted and messed up but I made my mind up
that if there's nothing nice to say, just don't
say anything at all.
Sir Elton John closed his show at Ceasars
Colosseum. It was a big fan fare. After all he
had done almost 300 shows over the last five
years. In the audience for closing night was
spotted Elizabeth Hurley and her new husband as
well as the Osbourne clan. His after-show party at
The Sea Harbor Seafood Restaurant with 170
invited guests was a show in itself. Rumor has it
he may return in a year or so. I'm still waiting
for Celine Dion to come back and show everyone how
it's done. Celine come back, we need you.
Lani Misalucha and Earl Turner are starring in a
new show at the Hilton," Voices"., The show is
presented by John Stewart from Legends in Concert
fame and is playing at the Shimmer Showroom.
Lani's singing of operatic arias is a show
stopper. She is on her own now but first came to
Las Vegas as part of the Society of Seven. Earl
Turner was one of the first entertainers I saw
when I arrived in Las Vegas and he does an admiral
job of bringing the audience up to par. A little
fine tuning and this show will produce legs.
The Peepshow celebrated their world premier at
Planet Hollywood this week and I'm sure my readers
of Gaming Today have been waiting for the review.
Peepshow is like Broadway meets Vegas.. Jerry
Mitchell is a genius at choreography and
directing. It's extravagant, expensive and well
produced. The show has great singers and
beautiful costumes. full of girls, girls, girls
and specialty numbers starring Mel B who was
fabulous with co-star Kelly Monaco, (who has
basically little to do). I would like to see more
of the all girl band that it features and although
the show is a tad long, it could use a little more
comedy.. It's only an idea.
Opening night audience for Peepshow included
Donald Trump, who was probably in town for the
Miss USA Pageant, Bob Mackie, Mimi Hines and
Lindsay Lohan. Rumors about town said Lindsay
would eventually replace Kelly Monaco, (almost
anybody could repleace her) but according to my
spies that's not likely. Lindsay, looking much
too thin, appears to be on a downward swing
again, and seems much too frail for the demands
of a nightly Las Vegas show. Lindsay, get back
on track. You are too young and talanted to
destroy yourself. The latest rumor is that
Elizabeth Berkley will replace Kelly
Certain shows in Las Vegas have a common thread
running through them. Burlesque? Maybe.
Girlie? For sure! My readers know I'm a fan of
Anita Mann whose show Fantasy at the Luxor has
been running for nine years. The show is kept
fresh by Anita's constant attention and
re-tooling. Another example of the common thread
was Showgirls at the Rio where I was a guest star
for Greg Thompson's production of Showgirls.
Crazy Horse, originally from Paris, has been doing
very well at the MGM for the last few years. It's
that common thread, adult entertainment, the Las
Vegas expectation, the brand that keeps
those shows here for years. And don't forget the
newer shows, Men of X an Hooters and XBurlesque at
The Flamingo.
Britney Spears is once again a target. Her show, is being criticized even before it opens. Hey guys, at least wait until you see and hear her. Give her a chance!!!!!
Trent Carlini at the Steve Wyrick Theater opened
his new show," Elvolution", this past weekend. In
addtion to the usual Elvis numbers, Trent sings a
number of songs in the way he feels Elvis would do
them.-a new twist. Trent is arguably .the best of
the Elvis impersonators.
My world and my life have been saddened with the
passing of the Queen, Miss Ruth Bowen. Ruth,
founder of Queen Booking, was my agent, my mentor
and my manager and most important, my friend , for
more than thirty years. She's the one that took
Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes on tour, and
rehearsed me for my opening at Madison Square
Garden in 1973. Miss Bowen was the power behind
Aretha Franklin, Sammy Davis Jr., Brook Benton and
Dinah Washington to name a few. Her life story
was being written and Halle Berry was to play the
part of Ruth as a powerhouse in the black
entertainment industry. My condolences go to her
husband Billy Bryant, Funeral services are
scheduled for next week in New York City. She
will be greatly missed by her friends, family and
all whose lives she touched.
Another loss is that
of the fabulous Bea Arthur. . .After years on the
New York stage, she hit "instant" stardom as TV's
Maude and then Dorothy , one of The Golden Girls.
That deep voice and her delivery were one of
kind. On stage, a strong and dominering
personality while offstage, a kind and lovable
lady.
Look for yours truly in a new Toyota commercial
with John Barr which should hit your TV screens in
the next few weeks. I look divine!!
And, as usual, REV MONTI will see you next week. **********************************
Legends In Concert --
still legendary "Legends" had been a staple for 20 years at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. The show features live re-creations of superstars from yesterday and today backed by an on-stage orchestra and dancers. It’s all great whether you prefer Elvis, Cher, Janet Jackson, Diana Ross & The Supremes or Tom Jones. Maybe someday, Monti Rock. Anyway, after the show we had a fabulous dinner at The Range, where the food and service are the best. I never really like to promote myself. Well, almost never. Anyway just passing along a reminder that Olive Crest along with the International Rock Star Academy are sponsoring a fun-filled family outing that I will be a part of at Town Square on South Las Vegas Boulevard on Saturday, April 25, from 2-6 p.m. It’s an outdoor music festival and a good old fashioned family get together featuring music and plenty of ice cream. That’s the fun part. The serious side is to acknowledge the work Olive Crest does to help prevent child abuse. Yours truly, Dixie Dooley, Mark Anthony Posner and Larry G. Jones are scheduled to perform. The opening of "Peep Show" at the Strip House in Planet Hollywood brought stars from New York, California and everywhere in between. The anticipation for the opening has been pretty high on the scale since creative director Jerry Mitchell is well known for much loved New York productions like "Will Rogers Follies." It’s a good time to take advantage of the special show packages being offered. Steve Wynn’s appearance on television’s 60 Minutes was a nice shot for Las Vegas. After all, Steve is our true visionary. He was quite open about the issues with his eyesight and CBS touched gently on his multi-million dollar divorce. Can you believe he was actually sitting on top of Encore when they made that commercial? My friends in California called after seeing the Wynn piece and said they had recently seen him in Los Angeles dining with a lady friend. Le Reve, the much revamped show at Wynn, has undergone yet another "face-lift." Franco Dragone is back doing what he does best and has made some positive changes in the show to appeal to a wider audience. Current openings and closings include Elton John’s farewell at the Colosseum which was the hottest ticket in town. Elton has had a great run at Caesars and is a great humanitarian. Our two reigning divas, Bette Midler and Cher, have set their dates at the Colosseum with tickets on sale this week for shows from August through December. In the wings, we hope, is the possible return of Celine Dion. The Luxor has extended Carrot Top’s appearance for another two years and Bobby Slayton is scheduled to open at the Tropicana on May 4. He’ll be the main act, but will book additional comedy acts. Downtown Gordie Brown is doing great business at the Golden Nugget while "The Rat Pack is Back" continues its run at the Plaza. Disney’s "The Lion King" opens at Mandalay Bay in May. The lovely Anita Mann was in town all week to revamp her show "Fantasy" at the Luxor. Stephanie Jordan is still holding the starring role. Anita keeps the show fresh by reworking and revamping. They get a lot of return while creating new interest for the show. Wes Winters will receive the 2009 Tribute Artist of the Year Award from the Entertainment Consumers’ Exchange on May 11 at their awards party. Wes is a good friend and a great addition to the Las Vegas entertainment scene. Call (702) 217-6417 to reserve your spot for the party. Wes performs at the Envy Lounge in The Renaissance Las Vegas on Wednesday evenings. The jury may still be out on Carlos Santana at The Joint in the Hard Rock. Hey, I love Carlos but the demographics may not be right. I couldn’t make the press conference for the announcement but we’ll cover more about Santana’s appearance in coming weeks. Now for my TV fix. Let’s face it Adam Lambert on "American Idol" seems to be the front runner, eye liner and all. He already has a presence and showmanship together with a voice that seems to be unmatched by the other contestants. Gil Marini and L’il Kim are the top two on "Dancing" so far. Last October in Atlantic City at the Taj Majal, I recreated my persona as Disco Tex with the Sex-O-Lettes from my recordings in the 70’s (which sold more than seven million copies, thank you). Another Disco Ball is coming to the Orleans Arena on July 11 and will include Gloria Gaynor and the Village People. Why not me? Apparently the auction of Michael Jackson’s Neverland personal effects will not go on. He is reportedly retaining possession of about 2,000 items and suing the auction house to stop the sale. I still want that throne of his. He can keep the gloves! If you want a quality dinner, try Studio B Buffet at the new M Hotel/Casino. This resort features probably the best buffet of any locals spot in Las Vegas. Among the highlights are the salmon (baked on bamboo) and the fabulous desert bar where patrons can watch the pastry and chefs do their thing. The state of the art steel and glass ovens are in full view. The May 29 gala celebrating the life and times of Monti Rock III will be hosted by Lance and Eva Posner. I’m the one who needs a reality TV show, not Steve Wyrick. I can’t believe he has one! If anyone knows his reality, tell me. And Chelsea Lately, I’m
waiting for my appearance. I’m funnier than your staff
gay guy.
'FREAKS' at O'Sheas,
Rock on Chelsea?
(April 14, 2009 7:09
AM) - For those of us that have strong constitutions, there is the new show at O’Sheas called "FREAKS." Produced by Anthony Cools, this is Coney Island revisited and (for us older folks) a hint of the great Tyrone Power movie, "Nightmare Alley." The show moves through a series of vignettes, some of which are unbelievable. It’s quite an experience with all acts legit. No illusions, the kind of show Las Vegas does best. "This form of entertainment is rich in history and has a long tradition of drawing large, curious audiences," Cools said. "The intimate showroom at O’Sheas is the ideal setting for onlookers to experience this type of show. They’re right there in the middle of the action." "FREAKS" is an extremely adult-oriented production and includes partial nudity, adult language and graphic stunts. It’s for an audience 18 years old and up with performances at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ,Wednesday through Saturday. Tickets are a very reasonable $29.95. See it with somebody weird! As for me, the career thanks to the Internet piece is going through the roof! There’s just one thing I need – to be on "Chelsea Lately", the very hip 30-minute weeknight comedy show on the "E" network starring the lovely and funny Chelsea Handler. I’m trying to get a movement started to be on her show, because who can provide more color than me? And we can wear the same outfits! Anyway, I hope word gets out that I want to be on her show. It would surely be a ratings bonanza. Speaking of movement, Hugh Hefner’s party at the Palms this week turned into a fabulous blond catfight between Holly Madison and Alicia Jacobs. Spectators found the affair a real treat even if it was tacky. Alicia is a regular on local Channel 3 evening news, the NBC affiliate, and of course Holly was just booted off "Dancing With The Stars" following her somewhat public breakup with Criss Angel and her departure from Hefner’s pad in Los Angeles. Alicia is becoming a major personality in entertainment journalism, while Holly’s star seems to be falling. By the way Hef at 83 is beginning to look a little tired. Maybe he’s had his fill of dueling divas and the whole thing has become too much for this Renaissance man. Nothing lasts forever. The Academy of Country Music Awards at the MGM Grand Arena last week brought stars from all over to Las Vegas. It was a packed house that celebrated Carrie Underwood’s Entertainer of the Year Award. What’s up with LeAnn Rimes? Was that the hubby or the boyfriend? My favorite was the darling of "Dancing With the Stars" Julianne Hough, who won New Artist of the Year. Julianne will be taking next year off "Dancing" to pursue her country singing career. And, it wasn’t a complete surprise when Toby Keith showed up at Harrah’s. Bet all the patrons at his bar and grill enjoyed the impromptu appearance. Lots of rumors swirling around Sandy Murphy, who became well known following the mysterious death of hotel/casino owner Ted Binion. Seems Sandy may be getting married. We wish her luck. Binion’s Horseshoe was one of the most popular and best known hotel/casinos in Las Vegas and home of all the major poker players in the world. The Binion mystery and all that silver buried in the desert created more of the Las Vegas folklore than anything in recent history. Several weeks ago I mentioned "Menopause the Musical" with my friend Paige O’Hara would be looking for a new venue following their closing at the Hilton. Well I hear it’s possible the show is moving to the Luxor. Many remember Paige as Disney’s voice of Belle, but her run in "Menopause" created a lot of excitement for her fans. Las Vegas will be treated to Patty Lupone starring in her show "Gypsy in My Soul" at the Orleans. Patty is known best for all of her Broadway shows and is a major talent. Tickets are on sale now. The International Rock Star Academy in conjunction with Olive Crest will be sponsoring an ice cream social and outdoor music festival Saturday, April 25 at Town Square Center on South Las Vegas Boulevard from 2-6 p.m. It’s going to be an old fashioned get together for family and friends with yours truly there to help in Olive Crest’s efforts to prevent child abuse. Many of our local entertainers will appear. As a standup comedian Bob Saget is bringing his adult humor to Las Vegas on June 6 at the Palms. Saget is probably best known for his family television shows over the last several years so this sounds like quite the change. There will be an exclusive Art Party on April 25 at the new Slo-Motion Gallery with six artists showing. Of course, there’s great food and drink. For info call 702-281-2346 or email mbdc@cox.net. We can never get enough Liberace in our town. This Wednesday marks the 30th anniversary of the nonprofit Liberace Museum. Some $5.2 million in scholarships have benefited 2,500 students at 120 U.S. colleges through the Liberace Foundation. It will be a Red Carpet Celebrity event highlighting "Liberace Through The Years – The Friends and the Music." For info call Shelley Mansholt at 702-304-1785 or email shelley@mansholtpr.com ND’S Fuego enjoyed a smash grand opening last week. The shaking and moving to the fabulous Latin beat is definitely a needed shot in the arm to our nightlife. Also, Salsero at The South Point has moved to Friday nights. So, dancers can now shake their hips, etc., every Friday. How about Eminem and that new music video spoofing Hollywood for his soon to be released "Relapse" album. As always he takes no prisoners. "Poor" Michael Jackson is only $24 million in debt on Neverland Ranch. Well he’s putting up most of its contents this month (April 22-25) at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California. Just the gloves (all right handed) are estimated at from $1,000 to $15,000 per. Ah, forget those gloves. I really want his fabulous throne! *************************

ND"S Fuego enjoyed a
smash grand opening event last week. The crowd
was really shaking and moving to the fabulous
Latin beat. This is definitely a
needed shot in the arm to our
nightlife--something different and exciting.
Another note on the Latin scene-Salsero at The
Southpoint has moved over to Friday nights
effective immediately. So , all you dancers,
you can now shake your hips, etc., every Friday,
instead of Thursdays. A good move for them so
that the locals who don't work on Saturday can
get to enjoy this great session.

Opening night at the
Golden Nugget for Gordie Brown was a star studded
event for Las Vegas. In addition to yours truly the
audience was filled was media as well as celebs like
Clint and Kelly Holmes, Larry Edwards and one of our
favorite entertainment seniors, Steve Rossi. Gordie
has filled his new show with comedy so it seemed only
natural that he dedicated the evening to Steve Rossi.
The evening held a couple of surprises that included
long time manager for Sigfried & Roy, Bernie Yuman,
who was quite gracious to this columnist. Must say I
was surprised when Gordie Brown sent a note to me
during the show and asked if he could introduce me to
the audience. As shy as I am I found myself to be
quite flattered but managed a Monti wave to all. It's
always good to be acknowledged in this fashion and
speaking of fashion, thank goodness I was dressed in
one of my fabulous attires. Love you Gordie!
The PeepShow finally
opened at Planet Hollywood but the media has not been
allowed to review the show as of this date. Reports
from others have been quite good.
Remember the infamous Kato
Kaelin from the O.J. Simpson saga? It seems that our
man Kato has a part as a wedding crasher in Tony and
Tina's Wedding which is playing at Planet Hollywood.
Seems as though he still a major crasher who will will
crash in on any type of affair.
The Joint at the Hard Rock
will make a splash on the Las Vegas entertainment
scene when Carlos Santana makes the Joint his venue of
choice for all points west of the Mississippi. This
is good to 2010. Well done, Hard Rock! Supernatural
Santana opens May 27 and it's expected his appearance
will draw crowds to Las Vegas just like Celine, Elton,
Bette and Cher have done for the Coliseum. Some might
think it's an off-beat booking for Santana but the
Hard Rock has just put a lot of money into a revamp of
the property so maybe this is just a sign of what's in
store. Seems like a good move for everyone including
the Hard Rock. After all, entertainment of all genres
is welcome in Las Vegas and the introduction of a
major star right now could be an asset.
The Rock 'N Roll Circus at
the Hilton is on my list of must see. Some reviewers
have lambasted it but we all know what they say about
opinions. I'll toss in my opinion after checking out
the show.
It was dinner and a show
at the Riviera last week. If you're a Neil Diamond
fan be sure to catch Jay White at the Riviera. I was
surprised walking through the Riviera Casino though. It was like a ghost town with only a few poker tables
in play.
Elton John makes his final
appearance at the Coliseum this month. You might be
surprised to discover your ticket to Elton's show may
be upgraded on the night of the performance. Check it
out.
How about High Hefner and
Holly Madison, meeting face to face-the first time
since their split. Being dropped from Dancing With The
Stars seems to be beneficial to the careers of those
who, shall we say, can't really dance.
Show West came in and out
of to town comparatively quiet this year. The
highlight was Michael Caine receiving a Lifetime
Achievement Award. It seems that many of the newcomers
have no "staying" power. Where have all the big stars
gone?????
Shecky Greene, the
legendary comedian, gives one of his rare performances
at The Suncoast May 15-17. He is considered by many
to be the ultimate night club performer and became, at
the time, the biggest name in Nevada lounge
entertainment He also appeared on TV and in movies .
Welcome back Shecky!!!!
Another birthday---Sam's
Town Hotel and Gambling Hall, Las Vegas' first true
"locals" casino is celebrating its 30th anniversary
this month., It is the foremost one-stop entertainment
center on the Boulder Strip.
David Foster, producer of
such recording artists as Celine Dion, Barabra
Streisand. Natalie Cole, Michael Jackson, Michael
Buble, and so many others, has included some juicy
tidbits in the book he's just published. Did you know
that David's sister, Jaymes, is the mother of Clay
Aiken's baby? According to David, Jaymes and Clay are
great friends and will both be involved in raising the
child.
Speaking of tidbits,
Michael Jackson, Kenny Ortega and crew were seen at
several Las Vegas shows, allegedly looking for ideas
for Michaels's upcoming UK tour. What better place
then our town to pick up ideas, etc????
Las Vegas has a lot to be
proud of and our own George Knapp from Channel 8
Television, the CBS affiliate, can be at the top of
the list. Mr. Knapp has just received the prestigious
Peabody Award for investigative reporting. I'd say
that's pretty good and congratulations are definitely
in order. Do they give Peabody Awards for
entertainment and gossip news? I think not.
With the closing of the
Folies Bergere at the Tropicana I was reminded that
the Folies had been a starting point for many
entertainers including Lance Burton and Siegfried
& Roy. When Barbara Walters' late father, Lou, first
brought the show to Las Vegas from Europe some fifty
years ago it included specialty acts along with the
topless showgirls and lots of glitz and glamour. My
first time in Vegas was in 1967 when I came to perform
at Caesars Place. I was just a kid from New York and
seeing the Folies was mind boggling and truly
extraordinary.
Jubilee at Bally's
gives us a final glimpse of the glamour, showgirls,
beads, beauty and specialty acts that Las Vegas was
built on so make a point to see the show before this
piece of history is gone.
One of our favorite and most talented photographers, Ed Foster, will be exhibiting some of his great photos at his show "Shots in the Dark" at the West Charleston Library from April 14-June 2. "Dancing With The Las
Vegas Stars", on April 19, will benefit five
non-profit cancer fighting organizations who need your
help.. Among the performers donating their time and
talents are Brent Barrett (former Phantom star) dancing
with Jeanne Bavaro. Visit www.DancingWithTheLas
VegasStars.com. for more information.
How about the bidding war
for getting customers into the topless clubs and
nightclubs. Limo drivers are allegedly getting $100.00
per person to bring patrons to these clubs. There
are rumors, only rumors, that the IRS will soon be
investigating the tip income of these drivers.
A great week to all from
