Monti in Las Vegas

12/23/2008 - Two days until Christmas, eight days until New Years Eve, and nine days until we start another year. What will we do to make this the best year of them all? That is the question we should all be asking ourselves. "What can I do to make this a better world ?" We don’t need to look to someone else to do it, we can do it; but only if we believe we can do it. We have a new president that is giving us hope for the future. We put him there, but we have to help him. Soon the evil will be leaving the White House, it is up to us to keep it out.

We must let go of all negative thoughts, because we only strengthen that negativity when we talk about it. The last eight years is proof of that. Think positive, act positive and your life will be better. We are all perfect, no matter what those. who believe they are in the know, say. I want a peaceful, happy life for all, we are all on this planet together, let’s make it a grand place to be for all.

Now that I have said my say, I want to thank all of you faithful fans, who have been supportive of me in the past. I love all of you. I love the world and everyone in it. Love is the strongest weapon we can ever use against fear, anger, hate and greed. It won’t be easy but we can do it. I want to wish you a very, merry Christmas, a very happy holiday to all beliefs and a wonderful, grand, New Year.
I Love You All.

See you next year.
The Reverend Monti Rock III

******************************

12/16/2008 - As Christmas and New Year's come upon us a brief year in review might be in order.  The triumphs and scandals, talk about the economy, Obama, Obama, Obama, the Illinois governor, another trial for O.J. which resulted in a conviction this time, major shows closing in Vegas, hotels downsizing, yadda, yadda, yadda.  Are we facing a grim future?
Personally I've had the most triumphant year since my arrival in Las Vegas.  The success I enjoyed at Disco Ball at the Taj Majal in Atlantic City was for me the greatest reality show of the year.  It was standing room only together with standing ovations.  We hope to bring the show to Las Vegas in the near future.
Danny Gans has been a Las Vegas headliner for years and recently closed his show after all those years at the Mirage.  His many fans can rest easy because he's opening at Steve Wynn's Encore in February.  Steve Wynn is still the visionary.  Always seems to amaze us, this man who has created the landscape of what Las Vegas is today while Sheldon Adelson keeps on building, building and building.
Adelson's Venetian is still home to Blue Man Group, Wayne Brady and the masterpiece Phantom of the Opera, which this columnist has seen more than ten times.  Yes, I'm a bit excessive.  On the other hand, Adelson's Palazzo reportedly has laid off  250 people.
Only a few days remain to catch Bette Midler at the Colosseum for this year., though she has added extra performances. Get your tickets while you still can.  Cher had to cancel the rest of her season due to her health issues after missing several performances at the Colosseum, but will return in Feb.
Disney is now coming to Las Vegas.  The music of Elton John's Lion King will fill Mandalay Bay.  I thought Las Vegas was Disney, it's just we have different kind of gaming.  Plus, I always thought of myself as Snow White so I'm right at home in the Disney world.
Fuego RawTalent will be moving to the Rio in Jan, 2009 with a revised show.  The talented dancers and singers have some new material which will thorougly have you dancing in the aisles.
Once again I didn't get all my facts right so I want to clear this up.  Tim Molyneaux's show at the Stratosphere, Bite, has been extended.  Tim, who's been a great friend of mine, tells me the show is extended, extended, extended and I am extending my apologies.
Bettie Page, the 1950's pinup queen has died  at the age of 85.  She was one of the pioneers of women's lib. Unfortumately, ill-health forced her to retreat from the public eye at an early age, but her photos will live on.
We also mourn the passing of  Hollywood star, Van Johnson. He was one of the biggest movie personalities of the 1940's, costarring with Lana Turner, Esther Williams, and June Allyson , among others.
Golden Arches like you've never seen before at Viva McDonald' on the Strip.  It's a high tech McDonald' including large screen televisions and is quite extraordinary.  As if French fries weren't enough, the asparagus were delicious.  This is not the old McDonalds, this is truly Viva McDonald's  high  tech state of the art kitchen,  and of course, that great McSDonald's coffee.
The Mirage debut of the latest Strip attraction, a multi-million dollar volcano, came off without a hitch.  Unfortunately I had to miss the evening's affair since I was busy at rehearsal getting ready for Lance and Eva Posner's annual Christmas bash at their Henderson mansion.

The Mirage Volcano erupts while Treasure Island falls into the hands of Las Vegas entrepreneur, Phil Ruffin.  Mr Ruffin, who owned the New Frontier, has just purchased The Treasure Island  from MGM Mirage. A good move for both, as MGM needs cash to complete City Center, and Mr.Ruffin belongs as a major player on The Strip.
I keep trying to write about downtown. So as a reminder, Gordie Brown will open in February at the Golden Nugget, Caveman moves to The Excalibur, beginning next week. The Golden Nugget keeps on being the fabulous jewel of downtown.  The Fremont Street Experience is offering up their Christmas show while the Neonopolus can't seen  to  keep   tenants from moving in and moving out.  Everyone agrees it's hard opening a new business in the current climate.
George Wallace, the new Mr. Las Vegas, who appears at the Flamingo is offering one of those super deals around town right now that covers both his show and dinner. There are rooms available at all the major properties and the three hotels at Primm, Nevada came up with one of the best offers around, they're offering three free nights for all local residents. Of course they're counting on the gaming and food dollars but it still sounds like a great deal.  Maybe I'll go to Primm after Christmas if the offer is still good. The outlet mall at Primm will probably be offering special sale items, too. That settles it, I'm off to Primm. I love to shop and I love a bargain.
Just spoke to my friend Paige O'Hara who is one of the stars in Menopause the Musical at the Hilton. The show has just been extended for another year. Ticket sales are down a bit but the show continues to do good business.
My year in review has to include some of my Las Vegas favorites and maybe some not so favorites. At the present time the Number One Show has to go to Donny and Marie Osmond at the Flamingo.  Another Number One for me is comedian Vinny Favorito, also at the Flamingo.  The Best Variety Show is V at the David Saxe Theater at Planet Hollywood.  The Best All Time has to be a draw between Jubilee at Bally's and Folies at Tropicana.  The Number One Act has to go to Bette Midler and Cher at. My Favorite Restaurant is Yolie's on Paradise.  Best All Around Hotel Service has to go to the Luxor,  as well as the most improved buffet The worst  hotel service award goes to ...... Oops, I'd better let that one go.  They know who they are.
Biggest comeback of the year goes to Britney Spears, also tremendous year for Beyonce and Alicia KeyesMadonna's concert tour and Bon Jovi's tour are breaking records. It's amazing, that in this economy, people still spend on entertainment.
The Golden Globe, the most entertaining of the award shows, has announed it's nominations. The late Heath Ledger. Merryl Streep, plus some surprises (Mickey Rourke)  are among the nominees.  Jan 11 will tell all., then, Oscar will follow in Feb if there is no actors strike,--SAG at it again. Grammy awards also come in Feb.
The Rev Monti still has some openings for Holiday Season Million Dollar Weddings.

Well, OJ's trial is over but his tribulations are only beginning.  A minimum of approximately 9 years in prison-most likely in solitary-is what he  has to look forward to. Should he break any rules or get into any trouble, he would jeopardize his chances for parole and could possibly face more time. Is this sentence a little stiff for this crime or has his past influenced the judges' final decision. It IS  very difficult to forget what happened 13 years ago.
Last week wasn't the best week for television viewers.  The Britney Spears comeback on Good Morning America as well as her MTV performance left me cold.  At least she appears to be making an effort to recover and that's good. The Rosie O'Donnell Variety Show tanked and NBC couldn't pull the plug fast enough.  Rosie O'Donnell --- Roseanne Barr, I get them confused. Both are having a hard time trying to return to prime time TV.   During this year's Grammy nominations show, John Meyer and B.B. King brought the house down with their version of "Let the good times roll".
Everyone seems to be looking forward to Beyonce's movie, Cadillac Records,  which is scheduled for release before Christmas.  Beyonce is portraying the one and only Etta James.  the look may be good but nobody can match that Etta James' sound.
Benjamin Button is another movie set to be released about the same time.  It stars Brad Pitts and Cate Blanchett.  I was fortunate enough to see the preview of the movie last week and must say it was more than I expected.  There may be Oscar talk for both Brad and Kate's extraordinary performances.in one of the best films I've seen in years..
Theater goers can breathe easy now. It's official. Disney productions made the announcement that the  Broadway award winning musical Lion King will arrive at Mandalay Bay and replace the highly successful Mamma Mia which is closing after six years.  Both speculation and anticipation have surrounded this announcement.  We're glad it's official. We got to see a sample of what to expect this past weekend as some of the New York cast performed 3 numbers for the show at a media event at Mandaly Bay. This will be something to see, a full 2 hour and 20 minute version which replicates the origianal Broadway production.  Previes begin in April and opening night is May 2. Tickets will be on sale shortly.  Definitely a must see!
Many of the major properties continue to cut back because of the current economy. I was surprised to hear even some housekeeping and front desk positions are being eliminated. With the closing of the Oasis in Mesquite,  it makes me ask, "are we facing more troubled times?" Even the popular nightclubs are no longer picking up the tab when invited stars come in.  Many of the nightclubs paid stars to provide an attraction and draw crowds.  I've been told Madonna drew large crowds last week end and the clubs were full.
With Christmas upon us Donny and Marie Osmond are doing their Christmas Show at the Flamingo while Bette Midler has even added a couple of Christmas songs to the Showgirl Must Go On at Caesar's.  Dec 19 brings Paul Anka to The Orleans as more and more top headliners move from the strip to the locals casinos. These are the people who need no special effects, etc to entertain. . They are the true talents of show biz.
The Las Vegas Marathon took place December 7th and it seems to be getting better organized and drawing more athletes each year.  One of our favorite charities, Opportunity Village which is unique to Las Vegas, is the beneficiary of proceeds from the Marathon. the winners received $8000.00 each.
Good news for all those fans of Wes Winters.  Wes has just returned to Carluccio's for his Wonderland Christmas Show.  All performances have been sold out for the Christmas show but Wes will be appearing at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino on January 16, 17 and 18.
Las Vegas residents and visitors who catch the local weather on NBC affiliate Channel 3 know John Fredricks and his beautiful Lab, L. J. (Little Jordan).  L.J. has been banned from the set my darlings, supposedly for biting one of the employees.  Bad dog, bad dog.
Menopause the Musical in its 4th year still doing great business.  Mystere, the first (and arguably the best) of the Cirque du Soleil productions on the strip is celebrating its 15th year at Treasure Island.  This is the show that launched all the the Cirque productions.
If you're looking for a pick-me-up for the cool winter nights or any other time for that matter, try the fabulous chili at Shari's Diner located at 1900 North Buffalo Drive. The pot roast and the burgers are also top noptch.   You won't be disappointed and you'll love the atmosphere at Shari's Diner, "where the 50's Come Alive!"

RETRACTION----Unfortunately last week we reported INCORRECTLY that Thunder From Down Under reportedly  would be closing. This was error. "Thunder " is alive and doing well at The Excalibur.
For my "Monti-Licious" readers, this Thanksgiving I have so much to be grateful and thankful for, as a columnist, a journalist and The Gossip King, my credibility is all I have to sell.

This week, the announcement of the Peep Show at Planet Hollywood and  Disney’s Lion King coming to the Mandalay Bay, tells us that even though we  are we in a recession in Las Vegas, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  As shows are closing and the theaters and  hotel rooms are  almost half empty, even with the gas prices going down, our economy is in a terrible, terrible condition.  But, the happy go lucky Monti Rock III reports that the locals can take advantage of this economic crunch.  Again, for tickets for tonight, house seats, go on the internet and find a way to get free seats and 2 for 1 dinners.  There is so much to be seen.

I like the Sahara show, Raw Talent and last week I went to see Donnie and Marie at the Flamingo.  My title for this show – delicious, delicious, delicious.  Marie bought a beautiful mansion in Henderson and I have been watching  Dancing With the Stars with Brooke Burke winning,  Lance Bass, he was in synch or was it "in sunk " sunk, he stunk.  Next thing you know, we  just  may have   Clay Akins Dancing with the Stars, now that he is a father.  That’s a winner. Cloris Leachman, who is 83 years old and divine, let the cat out of the bag by announcing that The Bride of Frankenstein, a Mel Brooks show, will be closing. There will be 15 other shows  closing on Broadway  beginning in January.  That’s the economy.

As other producers keep pitching shows here, I fell in love with one show I saw called Bettie Page.  Bettie Page was a pin up girl of the 40s and 50s – an icon.  There is a store at Planet Hollywood that deals with her clothing line, paintings and photographs.   This is an amazing new show soon to open at a major property in Las Vegas.

What is the status of Steve Warrick? Again, I have to give it to David Saxe, who has a well- oiled machine and who has Louie Anderson at the Excalibur, Thunder From Down Under at the Excalibur and American Storm at the Stratosphere.  So, is there a problem?  I reported last week about Bite at the Stratosphere.  Rumor has it there is a problem. At the Cannery, we have the return of Jerry Vale, Frankie Randall, Dick Contino– all those older stars.  So, there is hope for us older performers who are legends.  I was in Atlantic City doing Disco Ball, which was a major hit for me, we might bring the show here sometime in January.

We all know that Danny Gans who closed at the Mirage is opening at the Encore and la Reve at the Wynn keeps working and redoing and of course, as I reported for the last 3 weeks, Criss Angel is still holding court at the Luxor.  I don’t want to give him a bad review again, but it remains to be seen, does the show have legs or will word of mouth kill it?  Please do not shoot the messenger.  Again, when I talk about Criss Angel, I keep talking about the other magic acts, which are Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo, Penn and Teller at the Rio -even Dixie Dooley and his séances.

Again what is happening with the Riviera?.  We know Frank Marino is still  in La Cage and Crazy Girls at the Riviera and the Russian Ice show are still doing business.  The brokers, the brokers.  With all the construction being put on hold by major properties, the redoing of the Excalibur show, Tournament of Kings has been put on hold and Jubilee is covering up at Ballys. I, for one, need to see these shows survive because they are the pillars of Las Vegas.

When will this columnist be amazed and entertained? When can I report on something new? Mama Mia celebrates their 6th year, before closing in January. Mandalay Bay is now proeparing for the opening of the Broadway hit, The Lion King.  This production is going all the way with the  same staging and sets as the  New York production.

What is the nightclub situation in Vegas?  How are the New Year’s Eve reservations stacking up?  People just can’t afford those high prices. But, that doesn’t stop your columnist from organizing the Party of the Century, Disco Christmas Ball Party.  I want to bring the fun to Christmas.  I want to be the new St. Nick.  Deck the Halls with bells of Monti.  Tra la la la la.  This is the season to spend your money on Monti

The wonderful Vera Goulet, Robert Goulet’s lovely widow is still having her house done and ready for Christmas. We love you Vera!

Christmas lights and family fun!  Be sure to visit Ethel M Chocolates and their Wonderland Cactus Gardens and enjoy the delightful smells of a chocolate wonderland.  This is free to the public and open from 5 to 10 p.m. daily.  Also, Opportunity Village has their Magical Forest with a train, carousel and story time theater.  The cost is $9.50 and $7.50.  This is a worthy cause and well worth the admission.

So, my Thanksgiving was wonderful.  For my readers, I want to thank Michael Politz, Gary Coles, and the entire staff at TheVegasEye for making my blogs work.

Once again a Happy and Health Holiday Season from your "Million Dollar Wedding" man, The Rev Monti

11/25/2008
The local media was invited to Planet Hollywood for a press conference this week.  It was no surprise a totally new show was being announced.  Planet Hollywood has tried over and over searching for the right show to headline in their showroom.  As a columnist and man about town this new show could be the  innovation I've been calling for.  Surprise me!  Jerry Mitchell is the creator behind this latest effort at Planet Hollywood titled The Peep Show.  Mitchell is not only the shows creator he's also the director and producer and comes to Las Vegas and Planet Hollywood with a lot of  credibility. The Peep Show opens at Planet Hollywood in March 2009. Mel B (aka Melanie Brown) and Kelly Monaco both performed on Dancing With the Stars and will have major roles in The Peep Show.  Planet Hollywood's earlier shows included X-Burlesque, Steve Wyrick and Magic. Remember Pamela Anderson?  The current show, Stomp Out Loud closes in January.
Readers may remember I was a big fan of We Will Rock You when it was at Paris.  Paris was also the stage for Hunch Back of Notre DameAvenue Q and Spamalot were at Wynn and Harvey Firestein starred in Hairspray at the Luxor.  You can't say Las Vegas hasn't made the effort when it comes to Broadway productions.  Currently Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian, Jersey Boys at Palazzo and of course Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay keep the Broadway theme going in Las Vegas.
Last week I wrote about Legends in Concert moving to Harrah's after a twenty-five year run at Imperial Palace.  There has been a lot of hoop-la about the move but no where have I seen a mention of John Stewart, the man that created Legends in Concert.  Seems John is no longer involved in the production since the show was taken over by OnStage Entertainment but we still tip our hat to John for his vision of the show.  Legends in Concert will be sharing the room with Rita Rudner at Harrah's.  I see it as a good fit for both shows.
For those of you needing a laugh Comedy Special this week with Ellen Degeneres at Caesars Palace should be your stop.  Ellen can be a real charmer and she along with Jerry Seinfeld and all the comics they could cram into Caesars will make for a laughable night. Ellen is also taping parts of the concert for a  special to be seen on TBS on Nov 29th.
It's confession time.  I admit I love certain television shows.  I'm crazy about ABC's Pushing Daisies.  Word to the powers that be..... please don't cancel Daisies.  It's my weekly fix.
Next week's television will bring the season finale of Dancing With the Stars.  My money's on Brooke Burke.  Don't get me wrong, I like Lance Bass but Lance needs to grow a personality.
Barry Manilow's show at the Hilton is going through another change, which is good.  The show continues to do incredible business for this market.   Danny Gans closes his show at the Mirage on Saturday and prepares to open at his new theater created for him by Steve Wynn when Encore opens after the first of the year.  Boulder Station has brought back its Blues format to the Railhead (along with a brand new revamped Buffet), and Jeff McBride closes after a respectable run.  Caveman, the hit show at the Golden Nugget is moving  to the Excalibur making room for Gordie Brown at The Golden Nugget. and reportedly forced the closing of Thunder From Down Under. Tickets are a now on sale for Terry Fator's 2009 opening at The Mirage, after a successful run at The Hilton.
Latest word about Jubilee at Bally's is they're going to cover up.  What's that about?  Jubilee has been a Las Vegas headline for years and everyone goes to see the beautiful skin as well as the beautiful costumes.  The Folies Bergere at the Tropicana is another Las Vegas headline that continues to do brisk business like Jubilee.  And then of course, there's Criss Angel at Luxor who is retooling, retooling, retooling.
Everyone's invited to attend Joe Williams' 90th Birthday Celebration on Sunday December 7 at 2:00 PM.  Tickets will be available at the door at Summerlin Library Performing Arts Theater, 1771 Inner Circle Drive or call (702) 507-3860.  The Celebration will feature Ronnie Rose and the Vince Falcone Quartet with special guests Marlene Shaw and The Cunninghams.  Tickets are $20 and proceeds will benefit The Joe Williams Foundation.  Sounds like a great was to spend an afternoon.
Just in----Bite, the show at The Stratosphere has "been bitten". The show supposedly has been purched by the Stratosphere and they now own it.
Birthday wishes to Audrey Holmes, mother of entertainer Clint Holmes, on her 93rd birthday.  Keep it up Audrey-------you're quite a lady!
Recently I had friends that arrived from New York and was amazed to hear the "good deals" they had which included air fare, hotels and dinner shows.  We are talking modest prices, everything considered.  It was Expedia!
Raw Talent. has changed the name to Fuego Raw Talent.  This dance extravaganza it really most entertaining. and offers a novel approach to telling a story using dance as one of the shows stars.
As Thanksgiving approaches, we are all reminded thls  is one of our true American Holidays, and The Rev Monti wilshes all a great holiday season.
Last but not least, the Christmas shows be upon us.

18/2008
My head is still reeling from the Criss Angel show Believe at the Luxor. Seems like controversy has surrounded this project from day one.  As I wrote last week the show has some redeeming qualities even though it hasn't made me believe yet.  Cirque or not, opportunity for improvement remains with Believe but only time will tell.
I've written in my column that I'm a great fan of David Copperfield because he's a magician's magician. It's not just about the illusions, it's that David makes you believe it.  It must be magic!  David works all year long and all over the world which has made him one of the wealthiest magician alive.  Some have tried to include David in scandal yet he remains the epitome of what magic is about. Seems everybody wants to be Houdini but there was only one.  Enough said.
Alianti Station, the latest creation of Station Casinos, opened 11/11 at 11:11 PM.  This was not by chance either.  It was a great evening and everything was well presented.  Lori Nelson did a great job for Alianti.  While there I ran into Danny and Robin Greenspun who were divine and gracious as ever.  The drive north to Alianti is worth a visit, it's a marvelous sight.
Everyone has heard about the Sands Corporation putting a hold on some of their projects around the world, but let's not get too excited.  After all Sheldon Adelson and his wife are at the top of the list when it comes to vision and creation.  Just look at the Venetian and the Palazzo. Maybe they had to dip into their own pockets for some loose change, so what!   Adelsons have become Las Vegas visionaries, and one of the most charitable couples in the world--  and my dime's on them.
The Sands Corporation, the Boyd Corporation and others will make it through this stretch of slow.  There have been reported employee buy-outs and some layoffs while properties trim the fat. Sands has laid off 11,000 construction workers in the Asian market.  Station Casinos and IGT have also allegedly laid off employees.
Together with my staff we dropped in at the Sahara to see Raw Talent.  The show reminds me of an eclectic but wonderful presentation that involves passion, voodoo and fabulous Latin music.  Pedro Dikan Castano and Deyamira Diaz Fernandez , formerly of Havana Nights are outstanding lead singers in the production.  Raw Talent,  like Havana Nights before it,  definitely has something.  Let's face it... music,  passion,  beautiful costumes, dancing and many great dancers..... what's not to like?
After many years Legends in Concert will find a new home at Harrah's starting December 15.  The show has been a mainstay at Imperial Palace but is expected to draw even larger crowds at Harrah's Showroom.  Legends has been home to a lot of talent over the years.
This must be the season for change.  My wonderful friend Joanne Downey from the Review Journal will soon be making a change too.  After more than twenty years as Special Events Coordinator Joanne will be leaving to  start her own business, Las Vegas Celebrity Services.  Her past efforts will no doubt see her to success in this latest venture.  Joanne's exceptional  kindness to me when I first arrived on the Las Vegas scene ten years ago will always be appreciated and remembered.
Nov 20-22 brilngs us the annual Comedy Festival at Caesars. This years headliners include Ellen DeGeneres, Jerry Seinfeld, David Alan Grier, and Katt Williams among others.. This week also brought back the one and only Wayne Newton to the MGM, his voice hopefully well rested.
Wednesday night, Nov 12th, at the Playboy Club at Palms, Joanne Downey introduced everyone to Norm Clark's latest book,  Sinsational Celebrity Tales.  It was a spectacular evening enjoyed by many.  Among those attending to support and congratulate Norm were Dan Marandino, Harrah's President, Lon Kruger from UNLV, Chip Lightman  Mike Weatherford from the Review Journal, and of course yours truly.  Donny Osmond, wearing an eye patch for the occasion, met Norm at a nearby location,  as The Playboy Club is a no-no for him.  The  star of the evening had to be the beautiful white rabbit that jumped to the microphone to introduce Norm Clark. You had to be there to appreciate it.  It was remarkable.
Another great friend of mine recently left the Las Vegas scene and has landed at Agua Caliente Casino and Resort in the Palm Springs Area.  Phil Cooper is the Executive Director and from what I've read so far this has got to be a fabulous place. The theater at Agua Caliente seats 2000 and they have a spectacular line up of stars like Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Trace Adkins and funny man Lewis Black.  Congrats to my friend and a real gentleman, Phil Cooper.                      December 13th will bring Rock Star Auction, hosted by yours truly,  that offers everything from Hummers to diamonds.  Plan ahead and order your Rock Star Auction Pass by calling  702-755-3628.  Don't forget to tell them Monti sent you.  You can also preview the merchandise and get directions to the location.  We'll cover more on the Auction in the weeks ahead.  Never too early to mark your calendar  for the auction which will be held December 13.
While you're filling in the blanks of your calendar for December be sure to leave space for A Very Disco Christmas in Las Vegas.  This is one of my annual affairs and I'm pleased to announce this year's Christmas celebration will be hosted by Lance and Eva Posner, Terese DiMartino, Paige O'Hara, Marci Weiss, Diane and David Filter of The English Garden and Michael Politz of TheVegasEye.
Also note the Million Dollar Weddings by The Rev Monti is offering special incentives through the end of the year.

11/08/2008    And the winner is....... Obama, Obama, Obama.  It took more than two years of effort, thousands and thousands of volunteers and millions upon millions of dollars.  It is historic or would that be hysterical?
As a columnist I'm not really very political but we can all agree something is going to change.  At least the Republican nominees have a job waiting for them.  Not everyone can say that.  McCain will head back to the Senate and Sarah Palin will return to Alaska to complete her term as governor.  Who knows maybe she'll be producing her own television show in the future and maybe Oprah will become an ambassador to some foreign land, or maybe she'll just buy a foreign land.
Like many others, I'm not sure if we're in a depression or a recession.  The shows that are closing on the local front haven't helped define the economics here in Las Vegas.  Still haven't figured that out.  Does a closing equal depression or recession.  Guess it depends who you're talking with.
A couple of months ago I reported that Stomp Out Loud at Planet Hollywood was closing.  My facts were wrong at the time.  I can't always be right but I can now report with confidence Stomp Out Loud is closing.  It's closing the same day the curtain comes down on Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay.   The Sopranos at the Riviera is also another closing.  Just in, Dick Feeney's Viva Las Vegas closing this week after a long run at the Stratosphere and then at the Plaza. Which one is next?
Following my return from New York City I was met with "Bruh ha ha directed at yours truly.  I found myself confused.  After all, is your columnist a celebrity?  A star of yesterday?  I admit I drive around Las Vegas in my leopard Rockmobile and I carry a stuffed cat and a heavy stick.  Sometimes I don't always get my facts right but that's part of being a columnist.
The jury is still out on the Criss Angel show Believe at the Luxor, even though the Los Angeles Times review was devastating.  Now I have the opportunity to see the show,  I'll share my experience, as only I can.  Many critics have given a "thumbs down"   on the show and have said nothing positive about it. I found the costumes, sets, choreography and the acarobatic dancers to be excellent.  But there is too much Cirque and not enough Criss. The excitng illusions were on video, not live. What is left for Criss is ordinary. And what about Criss Angel walking out (after about 20 minutes) of fellow magician Keith Barry's show.   Not a good move, as Criss does not need any more bad press at this time.
Speaking of the Luxor, have you been to the"MORE" Buffet recently?   Steve  Katz and his crew have turned this place into one of the best buffets on the strip. The food  and ambiance are exceptional.
Happy Birthday to Felix Rappaport, one the the true gentlemen in our town.  Many more, good friend.
Harrah's was the scene for a new production showcase by Ryan Smith.  I had fun with Frank Marino, Breck Wahl and Jimmy Emmerson.  After Frank Marino's comments on my attire I had to explain I was leopardized in my new ensemble. It was a great time and I can let my readers know Harrah's will now be gay friendly. No kidding!
The divine Lorna Luft has just moved to Palm Springs.  Her next door neighbor is Barry Manilow.  Perhaps they can car pool on their trips to Las Vegas!  Actually Lorna is scheduled to appear in the Wizard of Oz in Manchester, England and will be playing the part of the wicked witch.  What are they trying to say!
The handsome, not so timid, Simon Cowell from American Idol has just broken up with his girlfriend and it only cost him seven million dollars.  Lucky him, they weren't married!  And I must ask, why did that not happen to me?  When I break up I give them the house.
Could this be true?  Former  Las Vegas and Atlantic City entertainer of the year  Clint Holmes  alllegedly at weddings?  It's true, it's true! And  at Town Hall  in New York this past weekend with Vince Falcone (where is Bill Fayne?)  conducting.
Sheldon Adelson's case against Review Journal columnist John Smith has been dismissed after three years. Adelson will pay all costs ad expenses and can not bring the same lawsuit in the future. The case may be over, but the arguing is allegedly not.
Most shows in Las Vegas are offering two for one tickets or can be found on Cheap Tickets.  Many hotel rooms are at half price.  This is fact, not fiction.  It was just announced on national television The Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City just did a layoff of about 5% of their employees.  Apparently television news hasn't been in tune with the Las Vegas scene because local hotels and casinos have been trimming the fat for months.
Thanksgiving will soon be here followed by Hanukkah, Christmas and the New Year.  I remain yours truly and continue to believe it's good to be Monterlla, as well as The Rev Monti

11/01/2008 - Did I hear a collective "Yeah!" in celebration of the end of campaign ads on television, campaign signs along our streets, campaign dialog and rhetoric at every turn?  Families divided, disputes among friends can now come to an end.   May the mud slinging stop and may our lives return to some semblance of n-o-r-m-a-l.
Come to think of it I would imagine television networks will see a tremendous drop in their advertising income with the end of almost two years of campaigning.  Not to worry.  With all the promises made I'm sure all will be well with the world.  Now it's up to all of us to hold their feet to the flame.  Sweet revenge for the many months of promises.  Did I hear another "Yeah!"?
Saturday night, Oct. 25th , at Taj Majal in Atlantic City, your columnist, Monti Rock III, performed to a sold out crowd as part of the featured show -Disco Ball.  I revisited Disco Tex and his Sex-O-Lettes.  Vito Bruno, the  producer, put together ten dancers, a big band, and young Sex-O-Lettes  behind me and it was a triumph.  Thanks to the Trump organization all of the performers enjoyed first class accommodations and top of the line amenities.  It's good to be Disco Tex again.  With the sell-out of the show, (about 5000 people), I guess I shouldn't be too surprised to find casinos in Atlantic City filled with a lot of action. It was perfect for promoting my CDs and t-shirts and made me quite aware of star power. But, what do I know, I'm just a journalist.
A little side note regarding my appearance at Taj Majal's arena.  I have to hand it to Bette Midler for her performances  night after night at Caesars Colosseum.  I walked or danced/pranced up and down the stage for little more than four minutes and could hardly catch my breath.  How does she do it night after night?  My hat's off to you Bette!
Following the successful outing in Atlantic City I headed to New York City to visit long time friends and shop, shop, shop.  Not sure what I enjoyed more, the shopping or my friends.  Of course, it was my friends.  When I say long time friends, I really do mean long time.  Many were with me at the very start of my many careers.
While in New York City Criss Angel's show Believe at the Luxor celebrated the grand opening with a gala party.  So far, the reviews have been mixed..  I'll do my own review sometime in November and still hold to the idea that everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves and right now Criss deserves a shot.  One wrong click on the email send key set off a misunderstanding about  my invitation to the opening, but all is well again. I guess the best way to generate publicity for me is to be out of town at the right, (or wrong) time.
Last week I wrote about all the Cirque shows in town and how I thought it might be time for someone to come up with something new.  In my enthusiasm to make a point, I goofed.  LeReve at Wynn is not part of the Cirque scene.  The powers that be must not think Cirque has reached its max here in Las Vegas because at this very moment a show about Elvis, a Cirque show, is being written.
The economy continues to struggle and that holds true for Las Vegas,  The casino and hotel earnings are way down, some by more than 50%.  There are at least two major properties for sale and many of the properties are making big cuts.  It seems as one restaurant closes, two more open and even though our Mayor Goodman keeps trying to generate business for downtown, it could take another five or six years to see any real development.
Downtown holds a couple of exceptions.  The Golden Nugget continues to be a mainstay for downtown and everyone is waiting for the arrival of Gordie Brown in February.  And we can't count out the Plaza which continues with Viva Las Vegas and The Rat Pack is Back.
Back on the Strip Donny and Marie Osmond are doing a brisk business at the Flamingo while Bette Midler continues to draw the crowds to Caesars Colosseum.  And as mentioned in an earlier column the word is that international sensation and adopted resident Celine Dion is waiting in the wings at the Colosseum.  Celine's earlier show was sold out, sold out, sold out for five years.  Her return would break records again, no doubt. but first she's trying to have another child..  Our beloved Cher is coming back to Caesars in Feb and will do her thing through May.  Stay healthy Cher-we all love you!
I love New York City and all the shows but some of the shows simply don't translate well to the Las Vegas scene.  Not sure what the answer is but we all remember that last year saw the opening and closing of such Broadway shows as Avenue Q, Hairspray and Spamalot. Once again there are exceptions such as Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay which will be closing in January after a successful six year run.  Also Jersey Boys at The Palazzo seems to be surviving along with Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian which, incidentally,  has been cut down to only one cast.  Word on the street is that Wicked and Lion King are coming to Las Vegas making it a family oriented scene.  Didn't they try that before and it ran out of steam?
Barry Manilow at the Hilton continues strong as well as Menopause the MusicalPenn and Teller still a sell out at the Rio and Lance Burton continues forever at the Monte Carlo.

Halloween, did you trick or treat?
